Fried foods may pose a risk for our health, but cooking and vegetable oils and their greasy residues can pose a pretty big hazard to our clothing. The stains may not look like much since they aren't bright and obvious.  Instead, oil stains tend to slightly darken the fabric in the areas they stain.  Unfortunately getting those fibers to let go of the oil can be a little tricky. It doesn't help that drying the stain can set it permanently.

  Tips for Removing Oil Stains

  Tip 1: Powder:

Talcum powder is great when it comes to removing oil stains. Made of talc, this powder is white and is quick to soak up liquids. The best part about this remedy is that it can be used for delicate clothes and it will not cause the cloth to become dull or lose colour. To use this remedy, just take any talcum powder, and sprinkle it generously over the oil spill. Now gently press down the powder with your fingers. You will find that the powder will stick to the spot where the oil has spilt and can be dusted off the rest of the area. Allow it stay on the area for about 20 to 30 minutes. If the stain is large, scrape off the oil soaked powder and add a fresh coat. Once the oil is completely soaked, wash the piece of cloth normally.

Tip 2: Vinegar:

Packed with powerful astringent properties, vinegar is very effective in disintegrating and removing an oil stain. Apart from that, vinegar also helps deodorise the cloth beating that awful smell characteristic to clothes washed with oil. All you need to do is soak the stained portion in vinegar. If the cloth is coloured, mix the vinegar with hot water (in equal proportions). This will protect the cloth from fading or getting bleached. Once soaked, scrub the area a bit to remove the oil stain. You can choose to apply some more vinegar if the stain has not completely vanished. Make sure you air dry the cloth to prevent any stubborn grease stains from setting in.

Tip 3: Lemon:

Known as a good bleaching agent, lemon can also help lighten a stain and lift out oil from clothes. Just cut a piece of lemon and rub it on the stain, gently squeezing the lemon to help the juice seep into the cloth. You can use the rind of the lemon as a natural and gentle scrub to get rid of excess oil from the area. Allow the cloth to dry and apply some more lemon if the stain is stubborn. Now wash the cloth as you normally would.

Tip 4: Hot water:

We all know oil and water do not mix, and this is how this remedy works. The hot water helps breakdown the oil on your clothes ridding it of a stain. To use this remedy, place the cloth in a tub and bring some water to a rolling boil (it should be scalding hot), now pour the water directly onto the stain. Scrub off the excess oil using an old toothbrush. Remember you may need to brush off the excess oil from both sides of the cloth. Now apply some dish washing liquid (preferably one containing lemon extract) using a sponge until it lathers. Allow this to stand and wash off the excess.

Tip 5: Baking soda:

This is a common household ingredient and is also perfect to remove oil stains. Due to the porous nature of the soda crystals, baking soda is great at soaking up liquids – especially oil. All you need to do is sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the stain. It will soon turn brown in colour which indicates that it has soaked up the oil. If the stain is stubborn, scrape off the baking soda once it is completely soaked and apply a new layer. Keep repeating this process till all the oil is soaked and the baking soda does not change colour anymore. Now, wash the cloth as usual and watch the stain simply vanish.
