When we think of all-natural cleaning alternatives to the highly toxic detergent, bleach and ammonia products out there, vinegar and baking soda may be the first options that come to mind. And while stellar they most certainly are, there are two other super effective cleaning agents you most likely have in your kitchen right now: salt and lemon. Salt is incredibly inexpensive and versatile, and if you happen to have a lemon tree in your yard, you’ll be stoked to know about these options for keeping your house naturally clean (and great smelling, too!).

Vinegar
1. Garbage disposal cleaning with vinegar cubes keeps disposals clean and odor free. Vinegar cubes are made by filling an ice tray with a mixture of 1 cup of vinegar and enough water to fill the ice tray and then freezing it. Run the mixture through the disposal, and then flush it with cold water for a minute or so.
2. White distilled vinegar can help to dissolve mineral deposits that collect in automatic drip coffee makers from hard water. Fill the reservoir with white distilled vinegar and run it through a brewing cycle. Rinse thoroughly with water when the cycle is finished. (Be sure to check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.)
3. Boil a solution of 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave. Will loosen splattered on food and deodorize.
4. Pour a cup of white distilled vinegar down the drain once a week. Let stand 30 minutes and then flush with cold water.
5. Wash with a solution of equal parts water and white distilled vinegar.
6. Wipe with full strength white distilled vinegar.
7. Cleaning with vinegar helps your brass, copper and pewter to shine. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and stir in flour until it becomes a paste. Apply paste to the metals and let it stand for about 15 minutes. Rinse with clean warm water and polish until dry.
8. Ant invasions can sometimes be deterred by washing counter tops, cabinets and floors with white distilled vinegar.
9. Place a bowl filled with ½ quart water, 2 Tbsp. sugar, 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar and a couple of drops of dish soap to attract the fruit flies. Always eliminate the source of attraction, i.e., ripened produce.
10. Cleaning with vinegar makes it easier to remove streaks from stainless steel appliances. Apply vinegar with a soft cloth. Try in an inconspicuous place first.
11. Pour 1 ½ cup to 2 cups white distilled vinegar in the bottom of dishwasher, along with regular dishwasher soap. Wash full cycle.
12. Place 1 cup apple cider vinegar in a glass and set in refrigerator. Within 2 days, any smell is gone!

Lemons
The acidic lemon has many uses. Its fresh scent is also therapeutic: uplifting, energizing and balancing! Use the remains of a squeezed lemon, or press the juice and use in a spray bottle.
1. Polish brass, copper and chrome.
2. Clean stains and bacteria from cutting boards.
3. Clean countertops, appliances, light switches and door knobs.
4. Soak plastic containers in lemon juice and water to remove stains and odors.
5. To remove clothing stains, rub fresh lemon onto the stain along with baking soda and salt.
6. Pour ¼ cup lemon juice and ½ gallon hot water into garbage disposal to remove odor, let run 30 seconds.
7. Clean windows and mirrors.
8. Clean the grill with lemon and salt.
9. Unclog minor drain blocks with a mixture of lemon and baking soda.

Salt
Any type of salt will do the trick when it comes to cleaning, so if you’ve got some of the yucky chemically-processed stuff laying around, use that for cleaning instead of eating!
1. Leave on heavy grease stains in ovens, pots, pans, griddles, etc; it will absorb the grease and make easier to clean.
2. Always clean your cast iron pots and pans with salt and a clean towel and nothing else!
3. Clean dust out of delicate fabrics. Sprinkle on dusty areas, let it absorb a few hours and then shake off.
4. Use in dishwasher instead of detergent cleaners.
5. Add to laundry to brighten clothes.
6. Leave on wine stains to remove then rinse with vinegar before washing.
7. Throw a handful of salt into fireplaces while burning wood to keep chimney clean.
8. Manage mildew in bathrooms and kitchens by applying a 1:1 mixture of lemon juice and salt.
9. Remove coffee cup stains on counters with a vinegar soaked cloth dipped in salt.
